That is the same error I encountered on the Mac Studio before I changed Terminal to Rosetta. Of course, on the Intel iMac, Rosetta is not needed, but double-clicking the bin file results in the output zsh: exec format error. I successfully installed the license this way on the Mac Studio by setting the Terminal app to open in Rosetta. Because Ambrosia SW is no longer in business and has no website, the only way to enter my license code is to run (i.e., double-click) a bin file named Snapz Pro X License that runs a terminal command. I recently upgraded both my M1 Mac Studio and my Intel iMac to Ventura.
Vendors of AI recruiting systems advertise that their software makes hiring decisions not only more efficient and accurate, but also fairer and less biased, as they are free of human intuition. We thereby refer to a broad concept of AI that includes complex machine learning approaches such as deep neural networks, but also covers simple algorithms relying on regression analyses as well as other kinds of algorithms, such as natural language processing or voice recognition.Īs the outcomes of hiring decisions have serious consequences for individuals, informing where they live and how much they earn (Raghavan et al., 2020), AI recruiting practices are worth considering from an ethical perspective. ![]() We define AI recruiting as any procedure that makes use of AI for the purposes of assisting organizations during the recruitment and selection of job candidates, whereas AI can be defined as “a system’s ability to interpret external data correctly, to learn from such data, and to use those learnings to achieve specific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation” (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2019, p. Today’s trend toward more remote and home office work further spurs the adoption of alternatives to in-person job interviews to assess candidates remotely (Wiggers, 2020). AI-advanced selection tools are attractive for organizations, due to their higher speed and efficiency gains compared with traditional screening and assessment practices (van Esch & Black, 2019) and are considered a valuable asset in today’s “war for talent” (Leicht-Deobald et al., 2019, p. Along with such fields as the prediction of credit worthiness, criminal justice systems, and pricing of goods, AI-enabled technologies have disrupted companies’ personnel recruiting and selection practices, entering the market at exponential rates (Yarger et al., 2020). Pursuant to advances in technological developments, artificial intelligence (AI) has expanded into various business sectors and workplaces. Based on this review, we identify gaps in the extant literature and point out moral questions that call for deeper exploration in future research. We identify 51 articles dealing with the topic, which we synthesize by mapping the ethical opportunities, risks, and ambiguities, as well as the proposed ways to mitigate ethical risks in practice. To inform and strengthen the foundation for future research, this paper systematically reviews the extant literature on the ethicality of AI-enabled recruiting to date. However, given the novelty of AI applications in recruiting practice, the subject is still an emerging topic in academic literature. As these new technologies significantly impact people’s lives and careers but often trigger ethical concerns, the ethicality of these AI applications needs to be comprehensively understood. AI applications can be found in various stages of recruiting, such as writing job ads, screening of applicant resumes, and analyzing video interviews via face recognition software. ![]() Companies increasingly deploy artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in their personnel recruiting and selection process to streamline it, making it faster and more efficient. Eukaryotic pre-mRNAs undergo extensive processing after transcription but before translation. RNA polymerase II is located in the nucleus and synthesizes all protein-coding nuclear pre-mRNAs. (Note that the “S” designation applies to “Svedberg” units, a nonadditive value that characterizes the speed at which a particle sediments during centrifugation.) RNA polymerase I synthesizes all the rRNAs from the tandemly duplicated set of 18S, 5.8S, and 28S ribosomal genes. RNA polymerase I is located in the nucleolus, a specialized nuclear substructure in which ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is transcribed, processed, and assembled into ribosomes. This is in contrast to prokaryotes, which regulate genes in an operon structure where one mRNA may be polycistronic and encode for multiple protein products. In eukaryotes, a single gene will produce one gene product as all genes are regulated independently. CAAT or GC box and enhancers or repressors (for eukaryotic transcription), which help modulate the amount of transcript produced in any given cell.TATA box, which provides an accessible region for the DNA to begin to unwind, allowing for access by the transcriptional machinery, and. ![]() The regulatory or promoter region is upstream of the transcriptional start and contains regulatory elements such as: Figure 11.2: Schematic view of a eukaryotic gene structure. The transcribed region is typically (but not always) downstream of the transcriptional start and contains the following DNA elements: a 5ʼ cap site (required for maturation of mRNA), translational start (AUG), introns and exons, and the polyadenylation site (figure 11.2). These are specific locations on a chromosome that are composed of a transcribed region and a regulatory (or promoter) region. The chromosome is organized into functional units call genes. The transcribed mRNA will serve as the template for protein translation. The 5ʼ to 3ʼ strand of a DNA sequence functions as the coding ( nontemplate) strand for the process of transcription such that the transcribed product will be identical to the coding strand, except for the insertion of uracil for thymidine (figure 11.1). Unlike DNA synthesis, which only occurs during the S phase of the cell cycle, transcription and translation are continuous processes within the cell. However, the translation to protein is still systematic and colinear. The translation to protein is a bit more complex because three mRNA nucleotides correspond to one amino acid in the polypeptide sequence. The copying of DNA to RNA is relatively straightforward, with one nucleotide being added to the mRNA strand for every nucleotide read in the DNA strand. Because the information stored in DNA is so central to cellular function, it makes intuitive sense that the cell would make mRNA copies of this information for protein synthesis, while keeping the DNA itself intact and protected. ![]() The decoding of one molecule to another is performed by specific proteins and RNAs. The flow of genetic information in cells from DNA to mRNA to protein is described by the central dogma, which states that genes specify the sequence of mRNAs, which in turn specify the sequence of amino acids making up all proteins. ![]() She was the spouse of the President of Argentina (Juan Peron) and had developed cancer. The ambassador to Canada from Argentina was in London at an inaugural event and was hoping to place an order for a Cobalt machine to save Evita Peron’s life. This offered a new exciting treatment option: ‘healing rays’ over invasive surgery.Ī patient prepares to receive Cobalt-60 radiation for a tumour. The compact Cobalt source was highly radioactive and could be placed in a machine designed to irradiate tumours with external beams of radiation in reasonable time (minutes). As an alternative, Cobalt-60 could be produced artificially by bombarding natural Cobalt-59 with a high-flux of neutrons in Chalk River’s new NRX reactor – a unique enabling technology available only in Canada at the time. Natural Radium-226 had been proposed to solve this issue but its mining was painstakingly inefficient and too costly the level of radioactivity that could be extracted limited the ‘dose rate’ achievable from a radium treatment machine – radiation treatment times would be intolerable for patients. This was the first major advancement in the radiation treatment of all cancers, aside from skin cancer, since Roentgen’s discovery of X-rays in 1895. ![]() The development of Cobalt-60 radiation therapy opened a treatment window into the human body and, for the very first time in history, we were able to treat deep-seated tumours without harming the skin. However, the first treatment of patients was delayed past the London date by a few weeks, much to the ongoing chagrin of the Saskatoon team. In support of the preliminary discussions the company has undertaken with the government of Québec, Electra will undertake a study to determine yearly production requirements for the industrial park, capital costs for the refinery, flow sheet modifications for alternate sources of feed material, permitting requirements, synergies from integration with other battery material companies in Bécancour, and potential funding opportunities from the federal and provincial levels of government.Įarlier this year, the Canadian government earmarked C$3.8-billion towards the development of a Critical Minerals Strategy. In this review of the Ameristep Element Hunting Blind, we have discussed how the product’s construction leaves it a step above others. It camouflages in most environments, packs and travels well, and costs relatively little for the product’s nature. Nonetheless, the product makes up for these faults with its overall size, ten windows, durable material, and ShadowGuard coating. Finally, the Velcro mesh tends to be noisy and hard to look through, despite being necessary when hunting. Shoulder straps may aggravate those with bad backs or joint issues.įurthermore, the blind is difficult to fold back up into the bag once you finish using it. The shoulder strap sufficiently carries the hunting blind, but it could be sturdier. The downsides in quality include the shoulder strap, cumbersome assembly, and Velcro mesh windows. The visibility from the blind is eminent.Īmeristep is a trusted name, and we have exalted them in the past. The NS3 carbon coating helps conceal you from the game, and the polyester fabric prevents accidental tears. The quality of the Ameristep Element Hunting Blind is unmatched – with durable construction and clear-cut assembly, you know you are getting a high-quality product. If the windows are down, the game would likely see the hunter, so the user must be extra vigilant to spot their next kill. They are secured by Velcro, which can be rather noisy to remove, potentially scaring off the game. However, the Velcro mesh material in the windows contributes to user difficulties regarding seeing through them. One of the most significant drawing points to this hunting blind is 360-degree visibility from the ten windows with shooting ports for your weapon. To further reduce your smell, be sure to invest in odorless hunting clothing and accessories as well. You will also notice the lack of scent coming from the product as the NS3 carbon enhanced polyester, branded ShadowGuard, works to mask all odors, sounds, and sheens. Take heed now that it does not come in a backpack, as is often advertised. This product is lightweight and portable, featuring a single shoulder strap for easy carrying. Despite the size, it weighs under 18 pounds. At 75” x 67”, the Element is one of the larger hunting blinds out there, making it perfect for a group of two or three to hunt together. Design and PerformanceĪfter setting up the Ameristep Element Hunting Blind, you will notice its massive size. The durable material prevents accidental tears, but some users have reported the supporting poles breaking upon setup.īecause of this issue, we suggest assembling the Ameristep Element Hunting Blind with a partner. You cannot go wrong with this design! Lastly, the hunting blind lacks a particular scent due to the NS3 carbon enhanced fabric. Regardless, mossy oak break up seems the most suitable camo print for the majority of hunting conditions. You will also notice that the camo is a mossy oak break up, which is perfect for autumn or woody conditions but can result in high visibility in extremely snowy or green environments. If you plan on hunting in colder conditions, make sure to also carry a good ground blind heater with you. Nevertheless, construction only takes about two minutes to complete before the ground blind is ready to go. Often, when setting up one corner, the opposite corner will collapse. Upon opening the Ameristep Element Hunting Blind, you should have a partner to assist in the assembly. Spider Hub designs are considered one of the more stable hunting blinds due to their boxy shape. The hunting blind collapses and slips directly into the unit. ![]() ![]() The Ameristep Element Hunting Blind comes with a shoulder strap carrying bag for easy transportation and storage. This is the most common type of externality, and the one that will be addressed most frequently in this course and in real life. Because externalities are often co-produced with other market transacted goods (e.g., emissions and electricity) this distorts the markets of the transacted goods as well as the markets connected to them. The presence of externalities means we are ‘missing a market’ for the externality. the market fails) because no market exists in which the affected party can express his/her preferences for the externality. ![]() When externality exists, the competitive market does not achieve the efficient allocation of resources in society (i.e. This occurs when property rights are NOT well-defined. Externalities can be either positive or negative that is, the economic activity of one person or group can have either a positive or negative "spill-over" onto other people.Īn externality is when the welfare (utility) of a person depends not only on his activities, but also on the activities of an “outside” person. But, sometimes, a trade or some other piece of economic activity has an effect on people who are not directly involved. When a trade is made, there are normally two people affected by the trade: the buyer and the seller. Shortly after it was recorded, Gene Clark quit the band. Instead it marked the precise moment when it all fell down. It was a drug song and it wasn’t a drug song at the same time.”Įight Miles High should have been the song that launched The Byrds into the stratosphere. We can also justifiably say that it wasn’t a drug song because it was written about the trip to London. “Of course it was a drug song,” he once claimed. It’s an argument that is strengthened by the slippery testimony of Crosby (his account changed whenever pressed on the subject). Perhaps the logical conclusion is that Eight Miles High refers to both the flight and drugs. “Gene was probably drinking coffee when he wrote that lyric.” “Cigarettes, a little marijuana, some drinks, a couple of acid things – that’s it,” Hillman recalls. Certainly The Byrds were taking drugs at this point, albeit not in the quantities that would creep in later. “We could have called the song FortyTwo Thousand, Two Hundred And Forty Feet,” he added, of its controversial title, “but somehow that didn’t seem a very commercial song title, and it certainly wouldn’t have scanned.”įor all the band’s protestations, it seems naïve to conclude that Eight Miles High referred solely to altitude. I think the inclusion of that word set the unenlightened going.” It was heading up the charts in the States until that tip sheet. Everybody was getting crazy about marijuana use, so we were immediately branded. Was Eight Miles High actually about drugs? Hillman insists otherwise: “I stand as witness,” the bassist says, “it was never about that. ‘In our opinion, this record implies encouragement and/or approval of the use of marijuana or LSD.’Īs a result, the single was banned in Houston, Baltimore and Washington, and stalled at its No.14 Billboard peak. ‘We have dropped Eight Miles High from our recommended playlist,’ the report sniffed. On this occasion, its tone was one of spluttering outrage. ![]() Bill Gavin’s Record Report, a weekly ‘tip sheet’ that prescribed what stations should play, was a familiar sight among industry insiders. In April 1966, an innocuous sheet of paper landed on the desk of every radio programmer and disc jockey in America. We tried to slip in the RCA version as the take from Columbia, but we got caught doing that.” Asked whether it’s better, Hillman muses: “I’m not sure. The band were crushed to discover that their contract with CBS stipulated that the track could not be released because it had been cut at a non-Columbia studio.įor better or worse, Eight Miles High was promptly re-recorded with Allen Stanton producing. The Byrds originally recorded Eight Miles High at RCA’s Victor Studios, with Jim Dickson producing and Dave Hassinger as engineer. It was also around the time of Eight Days A Week, so that was another hook.” But Gene said eight miles sounds better than six, and it did sound more poetic. Forty-two thousand feet – or about eight miles high – is the altitude reserved for military aircraft. “We started it as Six Miles High,” guitarist Roger McGuinn recalls, “because that’s the approximate altitude that commercial airlines fly. That same flight also prompted the song’s title. The reference to ‘ signs in the street that say where you’re going’ was revealed as a dig at the random placing of street signs around the English capital, while ‘nowhere is there warmth to be found among those losing their ground’ was a nod to the hostility they encountered from The Birds, a British mod group who accused the band of stealing their name. When The Byrds’ Eight Miles High was released in December 1965, it took little delving to identify the ‘rain-grey town, known for its sound’ as the London that Clark had observed from the plane. |
